By plane
The easiest way of getting to Bulgaria is by plane with the most regular scheduled services through Sofia International Airport. In the summer months there are also a great deal of low-cost charters to Bourgas and Varna as well as scheduled carriers all year round.
Low cost operators like Wizz Air and EasyJet provide daily services from most major airports between them while more expensive operators such as British Airways and Bulgaria Air also offer good options.
Other services through major carriers such as Lufthansa and Austrian Airways also offer regular services but usually require a transfer in one of their own countries’ airports and therefore increased journey time as well as the possibility of losing your luggage! |
By train
Don’t even think about it!
Unless you really like trains, because it will take you days! Bulgaria is not part of the inter-railing system so it means lots of connections, delays and general hassle. In fact, we have never even met anyone that has actually done it yet! |
By automobile
Driving to Bulgaria is not as tricky as it may sound.
The best entry points into the country are through Serbia (quickest) and Romania over the Danube (you think Bulgarian roads are bad!!!???).
Make sure you have international insurance (and make sure it covers non-EU countries if travelling via Serbia) on your car which you can produce at all border crossings, have local currency for tolls (and bribes…take our word on it…essential in Romania if driving with foreign plates) and never let your fuel tank drop below one third. |
